Costumer Reviews

I bought this TV at Sears a few months ago for my bedroom, when they had it on sale for about 500 dollars. I thought at the time that 500 bucks (+tax) was a good deal on the relatively new LED technology, and the guy who worked there sold me on the fact that it takes about 1/4 the amount of electricity that my Vizio plasma uses. However, I later found that for a bit more, I can get quality name brands online, like the Panasonic that I recently bought and reviewed on Amazon.

I saw this on gold box today, and I thought I would let people know what they are getting, so here it is- first, you are getting a bare bones TV that is okay to watch on. The picture is actually pretty nice, when compared to older LCDs, and almost comparable to my favorite screen, the plasma. The picture is not as rich as plasma, but definitely more natural looking than the older 60hz lcds.

Anyway, here's the skinny:It has 3 HDMI inputs, which is nice, even for a living room set, and more than enough for use as a bedroom TV. There is also a PC connection so you can use it as a computer monitor, but I have yet to try that. It is VERY lightweight, compared to my 42 inch plasma, and most people will be able to mount it on their walls without the help of a second person. The picture, as I have said is very nice, when compared to other TV's in this price range, but it is a bit on the dim side. When setting the brightness higher, you will notice some "flashlight effect," if you're really paying attention, but most people looking at a cheap TV probably won't even notice, or mind too much. There aren't all the cool "new for 2011" features that most TV's have these days, like internet and Netflix, but if you connect your XBox or PS3 to the set, or a internet capable Bluray, it won't really matter. I wouldn't really consider this a good buy, only because the name brand is generic and you never know what kind of service and reliability you'll get from a company that sells discount (read:cheap) electronics, and if you just spent a hundred dollars or so more, you can get something that may last you quite a while. But, if you don't have the bread to spend, you want to get a TV with great picture and don't mind not having all the bells and whistles, I'll guess you'll be okay with this one. Just don't forget to find a cheap warranty, maybe at Costco or something.

Update 12-16

I uploaded some pictures to demonstrate the flashlight effect that I mentioned in my review, and to give some alternate views of this set, because there aren't any other pics of this TV anywhere on the web. I don't understand why people think that what I've written is unhelpful, but I've tried to be thorough and objective in writing about a TV that I think is a good value, but could be improved. If you ask me a question, I'd be happy to help you make a decision.

Pros:

- Great picture quality once the TV warms up (takes about 15 seconds).

- Speakers are perfectly usable as-is and loud enough.

- Nice, slim design (thick bezel though).

Cons:

- Absolutely horrible flashlight effect.

- Still see some amount of noise (not bad though) when watching HD content (watched RIO blu-ray with PS3).

- USB connection is ONLY for servicing (manual states that it should not be used by end users).

- Takes about 10 seconds between pressing the power button on the remote and seeing a picture.

- All default color profiles were very off (not so bad as the settings can be changed to get acceptable colors).

I must admit that I was skeptical about purchasing this TV due to reviews I read for other TVs for the company. However, I saw the TV on the Lightning deal and figured that the price was right. So I bought it as a gift for my girlfriend. After receiving the TV we set it up (just connect the base) that night and hooked up the PS3 with a blu-ray copy of RIO. While watching the movie, all I remembered hearing was "No, this is not going to work." as my girlfriend watched with great disappointment. The flashlight effect was horrible. It looked as though there were four bright flashlights with the light coming from all four corners of the TV with the light almost extending all the way to the center to make an X. If that wasn't bad enough, there was some additional light coming from the top and bottom edge and a big horizontal blur of light that was half way between the center and the top of the TV. We could tolerate it for bright scenes even though the corner lights were clearly visible due to the black bars at the top and bottom of the picture (letter-boxing). However, darker scenes were just horrible. At one point the light from the top left corner was washing out the picture for such a colorful movie.

As a gift that she wanted for a long time, this was not how I envisioned things turning out. I must admit that the picture quality (HD only, never checked SD) does look great, and the sound isn't an issue; plus the sound can easily be improved by connecting a good sound system. None of the default settings looked close to correct in color (I have other HDTVs, one of which was ISF calibrated). This would have been a good TV for the money (provided it lasts) if not for the poor lighting. I never expected it to be perfect, just acceptable. This one is going back.

Costumer Reviews

Bought this monitor solely because it was a size upgrade from a 19" LCD widescreen, mainly to watch live TV a few feet away from the computer desk on a futon in the back room (read: not for primary DVD or TV viewing). This computer is our main desktop machine, but we don't do any video editing or photo-retouching on it, just general home office work, so as long as it was a bigger screen from a known-name company for cheap, it fit the bill. The fact of it being HD spec was outside the main objective of this purchase. I'm hooked up DVI and have not used the built-in speakers - probably never will, so I can't comment on analog VGA or audio performance.

If you're looking for a monitor to replace what you have, this is a great deal. The only real reservation about it is that there is quite a bit of blue-light bleed all around my monitor, but mainly along the bottom where the blue power LED is. Dunno if the blue halo around the screen is from this LED or not, as there's no way in the screen menus to turn off the LED itself without turning off the screen (which is logicial).

Basically: image is sharp (people who report fuzzy fonts don't understand flatscreen monitors have a native resolution, and running the screen at anything other than it's native resolution will degrade image quality), the screen is full-width (other reviews here of Yahoo and other websites not using the whole width of the screen is down to the people who program that specific webpage - it has nothing to do with the function or resolution of the monitor), and the colors/contrast are pretty good (save the extra blue bleeding). For general purpose use, this is monitor is a bargain. If you want to watch TV or DVDs more primarily on your computer, or if you're going to be doing video or picture editing, spend the extra $40-60 and get the Viewsonic LED (not LCD) 24" version of this monitor, also sold here on Amazon or other online retailers, to avoid the blue halo Viewsonic VX2450WM-LED 24-Inch (23.6-Inch Vis) Widescreen LED Monitor with Full HD 1080p and Speakers - Black.

I was looking for a new monitor to compliment my Mac Pro since I am dropping $4k+ on the Mac itself I can't afford their ONLY option of a $1k 27 inch monitor. I did some research and took a look at the reviews and decided to take a shot on this Viewsonic 24 inch with speakers. For $189 you can't beat it. It has DVI and VGA inputs w/ built in speakers and the quality is really solid. I use the DVI inputs with a DirecTV HD receiver and use the VGA with my Mac/PC. I am a little disappointed with the black levels for use as an HDTV but it's not really meant for that per se but I can't complain for the price. The speakers are pretty weak but the primary use for this monitor is for my studio DAW. It's a bonus though to be able to watch TV to take a break. ;-)

Bottom line is if you are looking for a inexpensive 24 inch HD widescreen, this is for you.

The nicest surprise was the packaging--something not conveyed in the product picture. Each group of 10 colored LEDs arrived in its own mini plastic zip-lock bag and each bag had a colored paper dot on it, so I'm happy to keep them in their packs until ready to use. The colors matched the bright "central stripe" found in the colored dots in the original product illustration.

These LEDs can be ridiculously bright - pretty much flashlight intensity. Like someone else, I did get a package marked pink instead of purple, but the light generated seems to be fuscia. It would be a suitable substitute for either purple or pink.

Costumer Reviews

After owning this TV for exactly a month I've finally decided to write a review, you know, after the excitement wears off and what not. Actually I'm still pretty excited about it. My previous set was also a Samsung 26" LCD and upgrading to this one was worthwhile.

Since this is a television, I'll comment about the picture first. Out of the box it's very good, after adjusting the settings a bit - excellent. The colors are very vibrant and no problems with viewing angles. I actually like my images to have a bit of contrast to them; I prefer black to be black and not grey. At first I was having a hard time trying to get it right, since my initial reaction was to reduce backlight and gamma, but crank up contrast and brightness. After a while, I finally figured out 'brightness' had the biggest effect. Around 30% was where it really kicks in, but it didn't occur to me to drop it that low. It's all about preference though, and this TV should have enough settings for anybody. Aside from contrast though, I don't see an insane amount of difference between this and a non-LED set... Something I must mention about the settings though, depending on which of the 4 picture presets you're on, certain selections like advanced video settings become unselectable for reasons unknown. Though I pretty much left that setting untouched. Despite that, I really like the fact that settings are saved independently across the 4 presets for EACH input source. So, for example, if you have 4 connections coming in, you can have a total of 16 presets - good stuff. I also tried the PC input through vga and found the picture to be very sharp. Colors are accurate though a bit strong and text is easily readable from a few feet out and this is coming from a practically blind gamer. The audio, I found to be pretty good. The bass isn't going to blow your neighbors away, and it's not going to replace any home theater system, but there is a very capable, customizable equalizer on board which should help a bit. Loudness for this set wasn't a problem for me.

Now I must talk about the 120Hz Auto Motion Plus(AMP) dealy as it seems to be the main feature that drives up the cost from lower models. What AMP does for you is, well, readable in the product description, so I'll describe it. AMP made every thing move faster while maintaining picture detail. (more frames in the same amount of time = faster) So, to me, everything looked like either home movies or daytime soaps which, if you can picture them, tend to move faster than most television programs and movies. Despite the bit about daytime soaps, I generally watch movies and sports, and after a few dozen years of watching them in ~24 frames per second (a bit higher for sports), I found the added (double?) frames to seem unnatural. After a few days found myself turning the feature off completely even for sports. Though there's nothing wrong with the quality of the image presented per se, I'd just prefer to see a blue flash go by as opposed to Ironman's actual chest piece go by, for example. And it only really kicks in at what seems like certain intervals, so the inconsistency in framerate got to me as well. I did find a use for AMP while gaming. Everything moves at what seems like 60 fps even when the game is not natively known to. Though, again, it's not 100 percent consistent in high frames (more like 60-80) and certain, very fast moving, games, like racing, cause what seems like screen tearing at the edges. You probably won't notice it (AMP) on games that already run at 60fps, and also it won't work miracles for games with already poor and inconsistent framerates. Overall, it looks fantastic for games, as I didn't give it a second thought about leaving it on, but for everything else I finally decided not to.

The main selling point for me was the Connectshare. I was thinking of purchasing a digital media player a while back, but here it's already built-in and it's a very capable one indeed. Though, there's too many to list here, the TV's e-manual actually lists suppurt for a dozen file types spanning several dozen video and audio codecs with bitrates as high as 30 Mbps for certain file types. It's played pretty much every thing I've thrown at it and handled any 'usb device' I've used so far, which includes NTFS formatted sata hard drives with external enclosure, no worries. Though once in a while the audio cuts in and out on my .vob straight rips, and I've yet to test files with very high bitrates since I feel the tradeoff for file size isn't worth it past 7-8 Mbps. Something I must mention about the media player is it does an admirable job of reducing video artifacting from down-conversion, however you're not able to zoom past the actual video while maintaining aspect ratio. In other words it won't crop the black horizontal bars for you on a 4:3 ratio video. You have to do it in the conversion. I found it strange since the option to zoom in is there for all the other video inputs.

As for the Smart TV/Samsung App hub, I tried it briefly using the Youtube app under a wired connection(which stalled on the initial install). Videos streamed very quickly and it looked like the the app always plays the highest video quality. Most of the other apps never appealed to me so I found myself quickly deleting them off the TV but this was never a selling point for me anyways, just something to mess around with. As others have mentioned, navigating without a keyboard quickly became a chore. So, hopefully, somewhere along the line, Samsung will separately sell their qwerty remote that's included with their 7000 and up series of TVs otherwise this feature could fade fast.

After all that though, I would definitely purchase this TV again if I had to (which I did - the 40" UN40D6000 series) especially at the $700 price-tag offered at the time (thanks to the wacky commodities exchange-like fluctuating price system here). Even though the LED aspect seems to do more for your eco concerns than picture quality and I seldom use the 120Hz Auto motion, I'd rather have more functionality than less. Also, I can afford it. However, for the casual viewer, those on a budget, or old-school movie-goer, 120Hz is overkill. I could go with the UN32D5500 32-Inch and still be happy. As always, see it for yourself.

The Samsung UN46D6000 is an excellent led HDTV set that is the best value priced alternative to a 3D model. In fact, the outstanding picture clarity and color of this LED set almost seems 3D at times and these are its most striking features. Other pluses are the light weight, thin profile and elegant overall design along with low power usage. Although, I would suggest that individual sound control features for bass, treble and balance would be a definite improvement.
